Sheffield Cutlery & Silver Industry

I came to live in Sheffield at the end of the 1970s so witnessed the large scale closures in the city’s traditional industries. I did however manage to photograph in a few of the cutlery & silversmiths including Frank Cobb Ltd, John Biggin Ltd and Parkin Silversmiths Ltd I also photographed some cutlery workers taking a break outside George Butler’s Cutlass Works on Sidney Street.

Social History part one

As part of a project to put my photographs from the past online I have just finished scanning photographs from the Peoples March for Jobs 1981. 30 years ago unemployed from the North West & Yorkshire marched to London. Young and not so young, punk and skinhead they marched and ate together and shared the same floors in church, school and sports halls for their rest. I was on the Yorkshire leg starting in Huddersfield and originally recorded the march for display in Sheffield.
